Turnditch

19 March 2023

The Sutton-in-Ashfield Rambling Club continue their popular diverse winter programme with a 13 mile circular walk from Belper Mills, exploring pleasant countryside in South East Derbyshire.  There should be a shorter walk option.

As always the club are very pleased to continue to welcome new members and this would be a good initial ramble to choose.

The ramble will start from Belper Mills, a charming market town set at the heart of the Derwent Valley Mills  World Heritage Site. We  head west  by the River Derwent to the village of Blackbrook and link up with a section of the Midshires Way. This is an epic 230 mile long-distance path from  the Chiltern Hills in Buckinghamshire up to Stockport, Greater Manchester.  Continuing on through Handley Wood and  following field paths, we eventually cross the B5023.

We soon reach our lunchtime destination, the village of Turnditch with the option of pub refreshments.

In the afternoon the ramble moves on to Muggingtonlane End and then  we  pick up bridleways leading us to  the tranquil village of Windley. After recrossing the B5023  we visit the villages of Hazelwood and Farnah Green. The latter nestles alongside The Chevin Hill  which is an excellent viewpoint overlooking Belper and the surrounding area.

We then finish this enjoyable walk by descending to the River Derwent and rejoining the coach at Belper Mills for an estimated 5.30 pm departure home.

In the morning the coach departs from the “Staff Of Life” pub in Sutton-in-Ash ield at 9.17am and from the Bancroft Lane end of Stockwell Gate outside ASDA in Mansfield at 9.30am. There are other pick-up points between these locations. No need to book, just turn up. The coach fare is £12, accompanied juniors free.
