Peter Dale

Today’s ramble is an 11 mile circular walk from Tideswell, covering Peter Dale, Wormhill and Millers Dale. Martin is unfortunately unable to lead this walk, but we shall follow his planned route to a large extent.
The ramble begins at Tideswell. This is the home of the ‘Cathedral of the Peak’, a large church in the centre of the village. We first head northwest in the general direction of Peak Forest. We follow the Limestone Way for a short distance before heading off to Dam Cliff, giving panoramic views of Peak Forest and the surrounding area. We descend to Dam Dale Farm where we turn south and follow a succession of very attractive dales, beginning with Dam Dale. Our path continues through Hay Dale to Peter Dale, where we shall have a break in very picturesque surroundings.
We then climb gradually to the pretty village of Wormhill. This is the site of a memorial to James Brindley, builder of many of Britain’s canals. He was born in the parish. The village green retains its village stocks. St Margarets church, the parish church, is hidden in trees at the south end of the village and was largely rebuilt in the C19.
We leave Wormhill and proceed through spectacular scenery to Millers Dale where we shall again pause for refreshments. There is a café and toilets here along with ample places to sit at the site of the formerly very busy railway station. An alternative for refreshments is the Angler’s Rest, down by the river.
To complete a wonderful day, we depart Millers Dale, cross Monks Dale and proceed along the Limestone Way, high above the Dale, before turning northeast back to Tideswell. Here there are pubs to further quench any thirsts before our departure.
We plan to leave from the centre of Tideswell at 6pm for the very scenic journey home.
