Longnor

19 July 2026

Our next scheduled walk is a wonderful scenic 10.5 mile circular walk along the borders if Staffordshire and Derbyshire. Lead by Brian Davies. We start our walk at the village of Longnor in Staffordshire. We will then head out of Longnor along Green Lane then turning south before the hill of High Sheldon to the hamlet of Crowdecote past the picturesque Pack Horse Inn. The Inn dates from the 1500s and was originally established to serve historic packhorse trails carrying salt, silk and lead.

We continue south past the remains of Pilsbury Castle, a Norman fortress that protected the Upper Dove Valley. A stop here for a tea break and an opportunity to explore the remains. Onwards we shall continue to Hartington in Derbyshire where we will have our main lunch break. There are multiple shops, cafes, pubs and toilets in Hartington. The cheese shop in Hartington is a firm favourite of the club and worth a look in, for the cheese lovers among us, it is well known far and wide for its huge cheese selection.

Suitably refreshed we make our way towards the village of Sheen and then onto the hamlet of Brund. Both are serene and secluded, very popular with walkers for short break retreats. We then connect with the upper part of the River Manifold where we shall make our return journey through quiet but very scenic fields back to Longnor.

If we have time after our walk there are pubs in Longnor to relax over a well-earned pint after a delightful day out.  We start our return journey at 6pm. If it is your first walk with us the coach fare is free. You’d be most welcome. No need to book, just go to one of the pick-up points listed here.
