Win Hill

Win hill rambling club

From Bamford Station we join the Thornhill Trail, and begin our steady ascent to the summit of Win Hill. We’ll have a well-earned break here and enjoy brilliant views, south over the Hope Valley and north along Ladybower Reservoir, Derwent Edge and Kinder Scout. We continue along the broad ridge to Hope Cross where there is a choice of routes.

Option 1 – The main group will walk up the heather covered slopes of the eastern edge of the Kinder Plateau, via Crookstone Knoll. We then head over to Madwoman’s Stones and the eastern trig point. We then have more great views, before the descent via Ringing Roger, into Edale.

Option 2 – this route takes the lower path, crossing Jaggers Clough, behind the youth hostel and through Ollerbrook into Edale. Our second break will be taken in Edale where there is a choice of cafe and pub.

On leaving Edale, there are again two options depending on time and the state of the legs:

Option 1 – will be to go up onto Mam Tor before following the ridge to Hollin’s Cross, from where we descend to Castleton.

Option 2 – will be to head straight up onto Hollin’s Cross and down into Castleton.

The main walk, taking both option 1’s is 13.5 miles. Taking one or both of the option 2’s shortens the day considerably. Booking is no longer necessary – just turn up as usual. Face coverings are still required when getting on or off the bus, but it is up to you wether you wear them whilst seated. The driver may still point the temperature gun at your forehead when you board. The bus will leave Castleton at 6.30pm.
