White Peak Tissington Ramble

18 March 2018

The Sutton Rambling Club completed their summer programme with an attractive steady ramble on the southern edges of the White Peak around the Tissington area. There was a choice of 2 circular walks with 11 or 8 mile options. The walk offered a rich variety of scenery including picturesque dales, the Tissington Trail and rugged moorland. There were plenty of breaks en route to enjoy the surroundings.

The ramble starts on the edge of Alsop Moor,by the A515 (grid ref 157564) and initially heads south by Alsop-en-le-Dale to the old Alsop station on the Tissington Trail where we will pause for a mid morning coffee break. The Tissington Trail is a bridleway following the route of the old railway line between Buxton and Ashbourne. .The second half of our morning walk continues south down the Trail until we branch off into the idyllic little village of Tissington for our main lunch stop where refreshment will be available in the cafe.
Suitably refreshed the route takes us north along the Tissington Trail for a short distance and then picks up the Limestone Way and heads north-east across Bletch Brook and onwards to the village of Parwich.

From here we move west out of the village and follow a footpath in a north westerly direction along Eaton Dale..Eventually we arrive back at Alsop Moor near the A515 and there will be the opportunity to enjoy a tea break at the campsite cafe.. There is then a choice of walks:

8 mile walk. Just a short stroll back down the road back to the lay-by where the coach will be parked.

11 mile walk. Take the minor road north, going under the Tissington Trail, and then turn left just before Lees Barn and follow a delightful path along Coldeaton Dale (one of the highlights of the day) On reaching Coldeaton Bridge by the river Dove we follow another attractive path along the southern part of Wolfscote Dale and then at Lode Mill (grid ref 147552) depart from the Dale and head back east to rejoin the Tissington Trail. The final section of this lovely ramble continues north along the Trail until reaching the A515 lay-by

The coach will depart home by 6.30pm.

This would be an ideal introductory walk for new members with a choice of distances, healthy exercise, attractive scenery and friendly company. The McEwens coach leaves the “Staff of Life” pub on Hack Lane in Sutton-in-Ashfield at 9.15am and the Bancroft Lane end,Stockwell Gate (near the Asda supermarket) in Mansfield at 9.30am.There are other pick up points en route. The coach fare is £9,accompanied juniors free. There is no necessity to prebook your seat on the coach.
