White Peak Ramble – King Sterndale
10 June 2018

The Sutton Rambling Club returned to the White Peak for a 9 mile leisurely linear walk, the route explores some of the lesser known dales, villages and hamlets in the heart of the Peak District, with plenty of open countryside and scenic views to enjoy throughout the day.
The walk will start at a car park just off the A6 at the western end of Chee Dale (grid ref 112725) Initially we head north crossing the river Wye via a footbridge. After making a U -Turn we quickly gain height and follow a footpath west along the northern edge of Wye Dale enjoying splendid views en route.. The route continues along to the hamlet of Cowlow and then turns south crossing the A6 and continuing south to the village of King Sterndale where there will be time for a mid morning coffee break and an opportunity to explore the area.
The second half of the morning route proceeds along a quiet road to a War Memorial at which point we head south east for a short distance along the Midshires Way until reaching Deep Dale. We can then go due south enjoying two lesser known dales,Deep Dale and Horseshoe Dale We then move east for a short distance along the A5270 and then follow a network of footpaths cross country to the village of Chelmorton where we will have our lunch stop with pub refreshments available. Chelmorton is the highest village in the county,a bench mark on the church recording a height of 1209 feet above sea level. In years gone by the village was a busy lead mining centre.
Suitably refreshed we head north out of the village past the church and take a footpath to the east crossing Pillwell Lane and passing close by Fivewells Farms and eventually reaching another lofty Derbyshire village Taddington at 1100feet above sea level. There will be a mid afternoon break here and the chance to explore the restored 14th century church if you so wish.
The final section of this very pleasant ramble takes us further east past Taddington Fields and through woodland and on to the car park alongside the A6 at Lees Bottom (grid ref 171704) The coach will depart from here at 6.00 pm.
We are always pleased to welcome new members to the club. A day of healthy exercise, attractive scenery and friendly company is guaranteed. The Skills coach leaves the “Staff of Life” pub on Hack Lane in Sutton-in-Ashfield at 9.15am and the Bancroft Lane end,Stockwell Gate (near the Asda supermarket) in Mansfield at 9.30am There are other pick up points en route.
