Wardlow Hay Cop

1 October 2023

We start from Eyam, where there are toilets. Walk over to Foolow for a short early break. There is a small church where you can get a hot drink. From Foolow the route goes to Grindlow and Wardlow Mires then into the top of Cressbrook dale. There will be an opportunity to climb Peter’s stone before heading up Tansley dale to Litton for lunch.
After lunch the route crosses fields and cressbrook dale and climbs up to Wadlow Hay Cop, there is an option to bypass the summit if legs are tired. We will then drop down to the road in Hay Dale where again there is a choice of route. The main group will take the concessionary path onto the edge of Longstone Moor and drop down to Little Longstone then follow the road to Monsall Head. Alternatively you can walk down the road and cross the river onto the Monsal trail before climbing up to Monsal Head where we will have a tea break.
After tea there is again a choice of route. Those wanting a few extra miles will have a short tea break then drop into Monsal Dale, cross the A6 and walk through Great Shacklow Wood to Ashford in the Water. Those wanting a longer tea break can stay high and walk over to Ashford along Pennyunk Lane.
The full walk will be 15 miles. Other options will reduce the distance to 11 or 12 or 13 miles
The bus will depart Ashford-in-the-Water at 6pm.
