Two Dales

23 July 2023

An area that the club hasn’t walked in for several years. Starting at Rowsley, toilets will be available, we follow the River Derwent for a short way before heading up through the woods by Smelting Mill Brook. We reach the small hamlet of Fallinge. We stay high through fields and drop down by the minor road before continuing to Copy Wood, Tinkersley and Newtonlot Plantation. There should be lovely views overlooking the A6 in the far distance. We then drop down Darley Hillside and down to the Grouse Inn, on the A6 in Darley Dale, where we will have a lunch break. (pub open at 12.30).
After the break we will do some backtracking until we enter the first of our dales, Hall Dale. Some scenic walking up to the forestry at White spring plantation and Nine Acre Piece. We cross the minor road to get close to Sydnope Hall farm and into Sydnope Brook before having a delightful walk down the brook to Potter Dam, Fancy Dam and Ladygrove. There will be a cave to explore so please bring a torch if you wish, and a possibility of climbing up a waterfall. Across tracks to the Square and Compass pub at Darley Bridge, where ther will be a stop for a break. The evening walk will be following the river to Matlock with the possibility of climbing Oker Hill if we have time.
Anyone wanting a shorter walk can walk, after lunch, can walk via Darley Bridge, or an alternative may be organised. Distance 13 miles. The coach will depart for home from Matlock at 5.45 pm.
As always new walkers are always most welcome to join us.
