The Edges

This walk takes in some of the best of the gritstone edges in the Peak. One not to be missed.
We start from Leadmill Bridge, Hathersage, heading south passing Greenwood farm, and on through Oxhay Wood to reach Grindleford. The route then gains height, going northwards up the beautiful Padley Gorge, above the burbling Burbage Brook.
Emerging from the oak woodland,we cross the stone foot-bridge over the river, and walk into the National Trust’s Longshaw Estate. Here will be our lunch break, with cafe and toilets available, or maybe a diversion to the Fox House Inn, time allowing.
In the afternoon we turn south again, walking through Longshaw Estate, enjoying the wonderful views of the dark peak hills to our right. The expansive views continue as we cross White Edge Moor, and descend towards the Grouse Inn.
Crossing the road and passing the Inn we reach Froggatt Edge, another highlight of the day. We continue along the edges, taking in Curbar and Baslow Edges, enjoying a picnic tea stop along the way. At the end of Baslow Edge, we’ll descend the Bar Road track leading us down into Baslow, for a 5.30 pm departure. There are two pubs here, in case there is time for an end of walk refreshment. The distance is approximately twelve miles.
