Tansley, Ashover walk

15 March 2026

Today’s ramble is a circular walk from Tansley via Ashover and Lumsdale. The distance is approximately 12 miles.
We begin our walk in the pretty village of Tansley, just east of Matlock. We cross Tansley Moor to Cocking Tor. From here we descend to Cocking Tor Quarry, high above Ashover. From the quarries, there are panoramic views to the east on a clear day.
We then follow an ancient trackway down past Overton Hall to the picturesque village of Ashover, where we shall have lunch. Pubs, outdoor seating and public toilets are available here. Stamps Coffee Shop is unfortunately closed on Sundays.

From Ashover we follow a track past Marsh Green to Kelstedge. Passing The Kelstedge pub there, we cross Chesterfield Road. We follow a beautiful path following the Hodgelane Brook through Eddlestow Wood.
Climbing gradually past Vernonlane Farm, we head through the site of Wirestone quarry and past the car park at Eddlestow Lot. Next there is a short walk up a country lane to a track on left. This passes through woodland across Bottom Moor. Eventually we reach a track called Cuckoostone Lane.
We pass through the Matlock Golf Club course, passing the Cuckoo Stone on our way to Chesterfield Road. Crossing the main road, we descend through Lumsdale. Historically a very industrial valley, it is now the site of spectacular ruins and beautiful waterfalls. We descend through the valley, before turning onto a footpath across fields, back to Tansley.
We may refresh ourselves at the Gate Inn pub before catching the coach home. The coach is expected to depart for the short journey home at 5:30 pm. The coach fare is £14 and it’s free if it is your first walk with us. New people are always most welcome to join us.
