Manifold Valley area
27 November 2022

The Sutton-in-Ashfield Rambling Club continue their winter rambles programme, with a 10 mile linear walk in the southern part of the White Peak. This will be a pleasant route along well-defined paths, with attractive scenery throughout the day. There will also be a shorter route option.
The walk will start at Ilam village, with toilets available. After walking down to a bridge, we initially follow the river and head north-west making a gradual climb up to Throwley Old Hall, where we will enjoy an early picnic lunch break. The Hall is a ruined stately home near the village of Calton, and is a Grade 2 listed building.
Refreshed, we continue northwards steadily climbing through peaceful hills, until we eventually rejoin the River Manifold near Thor’s Cave. This is a spectacular site, a natural cavern within a limestone crag.
We will soon reach Wetton Mill for an afternoon tea break with cafe and toilets. From here we follow the east bank of the river before veering off near Swainsley and heading towards our final destination, Hulme End car park, for a 4.00 pm coach departure home.
