Southwell

Happy New Year to you, I hope you are keeping well and looking forward to another year of wonderful rambling adventures.
We start our New Year Walk programme with a last-minute change to the original published walk. This is a late change due to Richard being unwell and unable to lead. Get well soon Richard.
I’d like to thank Diane, Bernie & Angie for stepping at short notice.
Our walk starts at Oxton Village Hall, this is a linear walk of approx. 8.5 miles and will finish in Southwell.
From Oxton we walk across countryside skirting the villages of Edingley and Halam, both these villages are steeped in history, Edingley is an Anglo-Saxon or Old English name which means “the woodland”, St Giles church dates back the 12thcentury and to this day, Iron Age and Roman artifacts are still being found. Halam, can date its history to the Norman Conquest, the walk also takes in part of the Robin Hood Way and historic Southwell Heritage Trail.
This route isn’t too strenuous and would be suitable for most levels of fitness and ability, especially anyone new to rambling, a great opportunity to welcome new members to the club. This area of Nottinghamshire is relatively flat and wooded, with wonderful scenery.
Please note that there are no toilet facilities or places for refreshments along the route, our mid- morning rest break and the lunch stop will be decided upon on Sunday, and will be dependent on the weather conditions, etc.
Our coach will drop us at Oxton Village Hall and will be waiting for us at approx. 4pm in Southwell. Exact pick-up location to be determined on Sunday with our coach driver. Southwell has several excellent pubs to choose from so we can be assured of enjoying a well- earned restorative drink.
