Eyam and the Last Chance Bridge

2 October 2022

The ramble starts from the village of Calver and initially heads westwards to Deep Rake overlooking Cooms Dale. We then pick up an old drovers road twards Black Harry Gate and then turn north past Cavendish Mill.

Then the route crosses the A6 and continues through Middleton Dale along an overgrown wooded path. This will take us to our lunchtime destination, the picturesque Eyam village. Excellent facilities with a choice of cafes or pub for refreshments and public toilets located by the car park at the western edge of the village.

Rejuvinated we move northwards in the afternoon to Highcliffe. There then follows another scenic section of the walk as we descend Bretton Clough to a regular picnic spot, Stoke Ford.

We then follow a rough and ready footpath by the quaintly named ‘Last Chance Bridge’ (weight limit 12 stone!) heading north-eastwards to Hathersage. The coach will depart from the bus stop on the Main Road at 6pm.

Coacgh departs teh Staff of Life pub in Sutton-in-Ashfield at 9.15 am and from the ASDA bust stop, Stockwell Gate, Mansfield at 9.30am. Other pick-up poinys en-route. The coach fare is £12, accompanied juniors free. For further information please ring Helen on 0759 2886381, or John on 07749 164455.
