Derwent Edge

A very scenic walk from Fairholmes visitor centre. On leaving Fairholmes we walk down to the dam wall and follow the path along Derwent dam. We then turn off to take a lovely path ascending up eventually reaching the moor. We cross over the moor to a National Trust path to Back Tor. From the trig point there are far reaching views and an engraving in the rock which reads “Where Mary and Jack got engaged in 1933”. From here we follow a part slabbed path along the ridge with views to Kinder, Lose Hill, Mam Tor and Win Hill. We then pass various rock shapes known as cakes of bread, salt cellar and Wheel Stones (local name is Coach and Horses). There is an alternative short cut but to do the full walk we carry on and have excellent views of the reservoirs. Descending down we pass ancient barns restored by the National Trust. Back to the track we pass the foundations of the drowned village and the gates of the old hall. Follow the track back to the dam wall and Fairholmes. Estimated mileage 12 miles. Coach leaving between 6 and 6:30 pm. There are no facilities available. Please take sufficient food and drink for the day.
