Cromford Ramble

We start our journey at Whatstandwell, for a gentle stroll along the canal path of the Cromford Canal. The canal dates from 1793 and cost twice the the initial estimate of £42,697 (£6.2 million in today’s equivalent cost). Moral never trust building estimates. The canal was last used as a working waterway in 1944 and is now rich in wildlife. We proceed through the 42 yards long Gregory Tunnel, built through the outcrop of Lea Rock.  

  We leave the canal for this part of the walk to ascend to Intake Lane with fine views of the Dales. After a initial stop in Cromford we ascend to Black Rocks, and then follow the High Peak trail, to rejoin the canal walking a different stretch to Cromford Wharf. Here we will have time to have lunch, with plenty of choice of cafes and pubs, or places to enjoy your own refreshments. After suitable refreshments we ascend to Hearthstone Lane to Starkholmes. 

We then make our way to Matlock Bath to end our journey, and if sufficient time before catching the coach home we may have a little time to enjoy a drink, or enjoy the abundant attractions of Derbyshire’s seaside resort – 70 miles from the sea. The coach will leave at 4.30 pm. Walk distance, about 9 miles.

New walkers are always most welcome. No need to book, just turn up at one of the coach pick up points.
