Cressbrook Dale Ramble
13 May 2018

The Sutton Rambling Club continued their summer programme with a very scenic 10 mile linear ramble through a rich variety of White Peak dales; Tansley,Cressbrook,Monsal and Deepdale.. Shorter options available en route.
The walk will commence at the village of Litton (grid ref 165752) situated 1000 feet above sea level with the oldest house dating back to 1639. . We head south to the national nature reserve of Tansley Dale.. The route descends through the dale until we meet the thickly wooded Cressbrook Dale and cross the river Wye.. Then there will be an opportunity to enjoy wonderful views of the dales during a mid morning coffee break part way up the hill side.(Walkers not wishing to make the climb may continue along the river bank and meet the main group later).
After this break we head downhill towards the river and along the dale towards Cressbrook. We skirt the mill and the pond at Water-cum-Jolly to link up with the old railway line which has now become the Monsal Trail.. We continue along the trail for a short distance and then reach one of the highlights of the day , the wonderful viewpoint of Monsal Head overlooking Monsal Dale. This will be our lunch stop with a choice of refreshments-pub,cafe and/or ice cream van!
Suitably refreshed we take a wooded path west down into Monsal Dale, cross the river via a footbridge and continue along the bank until we reach the A6. The route takes us across the road and moves south through Deep Dale with its rich variety of plant life.. This beautiful walk is completed along field paths into the village of Monyash (grid ref 1506670.) Refreshments will be available here before a coach departure home at 6.30pm.
