Chatsworth Ramble

8 January 2023

After the Christmas break, the Sutton Rambling Club resume their popular fortnightly winter programme with an attractive, gentle 9 mile linear walk in the White Peak. A shorter option  should be available. As always we are pleased to welcome new members.

The ramble will start from Matlock and follow the Derwent  Heritage Way through pleasant countryside, alongside the River Derwent. We then cross the river at Darley Bridge, an ancient bridge believed to be one of the oldest crossings of the tumbling waters of the Derwent. From here we follow footpaths to Churchtown where we will see the national heritage Peak Rail line. We continue our journey to Rowsley village for our lunchtime break. Good facilities here with pub, cafe, toilets and a range of shops.

After lunch we follow footpaths to Beeley, originally an estate village established for the employees of the Duke of Devonshire. We finish this lovely ramble with a steady walk by the River Derwent passing the imposing Chatsworth House. eventually reaching our final destination Baslow village for a 4.15 pm coach departure home.

In the morning the coach departs from the  “Staff of Life “pub in Sutton-in-Ashfield  at 9.15am and from the Bancroft Lane end of Stockwell Gate outside Asda in Mansfield at 9.30 am. Other pick up points en route. The coach fare is £12, accompanied juniors free. For further information please ring Helen on  07592886381 or John on 07749164455. Alternatively visit our regularly updated website www.suttonramblingclub.com which will have a full description of the route.
