Carsington Ramble

The  club return to the southern fringes of the White Peak to enjoy a 13 mile ramble, exploring pleasant countryside in the Middleton, Carsington and Wirksworth areas. The walk will commence from the B5036 near the Steeple Grange cemetery and take footpaths through the old quarry sites to the village of Middleton. We head through the church grounds,and then ascend a road and  pick up a footpath on to Middleton Moor eventually reaching Middleton Top on the High Peak Trail. Expansive views from here. The location of the restored steam engine house, built in 1824 to enable wagons to be hauled up the incline.

We then follow a B road and take a lane towards Hopton village and veer off into the  pleasant little limestone village of Carsington. Onwards through the village to Carsington Water and stop at the visitor centre for our main lunch break. Catering, shop and toilet facilities available.

Carsington Water reservoir was built in 1989,  but was not officially opened until May 1992 by the Queen. The ramble takes us in an anti-clockwise direction around the reservoir before taking a footpath past Hall Wood on to Stainsboro Lane. We descend this lane and  then walk along a footpath to Warmbrook. The final section of this interesting route takes us through lanes and footpaths into Wirksworth, once a very busy quarrying town. From the market place we will make for the B6023 and will soon reach a lay-by for a 6.00pm coach departure home.
