Beeley / Chatsworth Park Walk

22 March 2020

The Sutton-in-Ashfield and District Rambling Club continues its popular diverse winter rambles programme with a scenic 12 mile linear walk between Bakewell and Baslow in the White Peak area.. There will be at least one shorter walk option.

Departing from Bakewell across the golf course we turn into the Haddon estate and onwards through the delightful Manners Wood with its plethora of beech trees. There will be a short mid morning break in this area before crossing the ridge and dropping down the valley into Calton Lees. From here we should be able to see the Russian cottage built by the Duke of Devonshire in anticipation of a visit from the Czar, which never came to pass. The main lunch break will be enjoyed at the adjacent Chatsworth Garden Centre with refreshments available.

In the afternoon we cross the river and walk up through Beeley village and up on to Beeley Moor eventually reaching the tumulus called Hob Hurst’s House. From here we walk along Gibbet Moor and descend to the Robin Hood Inn alongside what is likely to be a fast flowing stream. The last section of this beautiful ramble heads back through Chatsworth Park to Baslow for a 5.45pm coach departure home.
