Baslow / Chatsworth

We begin this 8.7 mile walk by going up Eaton Hill and onto Bar Road, until we reach a footpath post on the left. This has a small memorial plaque to George Shaw of Sutton-in-Ashfield 1982. We follow the footpath over grassland and moorland with fine views over Curbar, Calver and Baslow. On reaching the top of Baslow Edge we follow this route south to Wellington’s monument seeing Eagle Stone on our left. The monument was erected in 1866, fourteen years after Wellington’s death, to counterbalance the memorial dedicated to Admiral Nelson on nearby Birchen Edge, which is our next point of interest. Nelson’s monument was erected in 1810 by John Brightman, a naval man from Baslow. Three rocks nearby are said to commemorate the ships of Nelson’s fleet – Victory, Defiance and Royal Sovereign.
We then continue through the woods of Birchen Edge down to the Robin Hood pub, crossing the A619 into Chatsworth Estate. After a little climb we get more impressive views while we walk the tricky path taking us to Dobb Edge through more woods to the Hunting Tower. From here it is down steep steps to the main car park for Chatsworth House. There are toilet facilities by the cafe. We can walk down to the bridge then along the main footpath north and out through the circular kissing gate leading back to Baslow.
