Peak District walking club – Recommended rambles

The Sutton in Ashfield rambling club, founded in 1931, is delighted to welcome new and existing members on our walks. Below you can see a selection of our favourite walks in the Peak District, UK.

The Peak District has a rich history, with rolling hills hiding many a delight - stone circles, ancient villages, and abandoned castles. Our walking group would highly recommend any of the following rambles:

Alport Castles Ramble

Alport Castles Ramble

The final walk of the summer programme sees the group visiting the Ladybower Reservoir and Alport Castles. The distance is approximately 12 miles. We begin our walk at the Fairholmes Visitor Centre, adjacent to the Ladybower Reservoir and the Derwent Dam. There are toilets and refreshments available here. We shall walk past the Derwent Dam and along the west shore […]

Dove Dale

Dove Dale

Start at Thorpe and descend into Lin Dale. There is an option to go up Thorpe Cloud here whilst the main group walk down Lin Dale to the Stepping Stones in Dovedale where we will regroup. (We do not cross the stepping stones).  The main walk will then climb steeply up to the high path above the dale which we […]

Miller’s Dale walk

Miller’s Dale walk

The last time the club did this walk was 20th February, 2020. We were in the eye of Storm Dennis, with gale force winds and lashing rain. The hardy, or fool-hardy group of eleven left Monsal Head. Standing up was difficult, let alone moving forward in a straight line. At one point Stan was pinned to a barbed-wire fence, unable […]

Latkill Dale ramble

Latkill Dale ramble

Lathkill Dale – Sunday August 22nd – Leader Martin Adkin A varied, circular walk from the picturesque village of Yougrave. From the village we descend into Bradford Dale and follow the trout-rich waters of the River Bradford. Climbing out of the dale we gain height to reach the Limestone Way. The paths cross the upland limestone plateau, as we head […]

Eyam walk

Eyam walk

A varied, scenic walk starting from Grindleford Station. We ascend up to Froggatt Edge and make our way to Eyam. Lunch will be taken here, there is a choice of cafes or pub, or just sit and enjoy a pic-nic in this interesting village. Then the ‘A’ party will enjoy a brief encounter with a petrified wood, followed by blazing […]

Win Hill

Win Hill

From Bamford Station we join the Thornhill Trail, and begin our steady ascent to the summit of Win Hill. We’ll have a well-earned break here and enjoy brilliant views, south over the Hope Valley and north along Ladybower Reservoir, Derwent Edge and Kinder Scout. We continue along the broad ridge to Hope Cross where there is a choice of routes. […]

Chee Dale

Chee Dale

This varied and hilly 13 mile walk starts from the Waterloo Inn (now sadly closed) to the west of Taddington. We initially follow the Limestone Way, gaining height to give expansive views over the ‘White Peak’ country. The path leads us westwards before descending into Chelmorton Village. Leaving here the route levels off, leading through some stunning wildflower meadows. We […]
