Sutton in Ashfield Rambling Club

This is a previous walk by the Sutton in Ashfield Rambling Club in the Peak District. Please click for details of the next walk or a walking calendar.

The Sutton Rambling Club continues its popular diverse summer rambles programme with a 10 mile circular ramble from Tutbury in Staffordshire. The walk will encompass agricultural and woodland landscapes with fine views of the distant Peak District hills and visiting a variety of Staffordshire villages en route.

The walk will start at the village of Tutbury and head west past the church and castle ramparts and descend to the the vale of Dove.. The route then takes us alongside the river and then strikes off to the hamlet of Fauld. This is the tragic site of a huge explosion in November 1944 when a RAF dump containing 3500 tons of high explosives accidentally blew up leaving a huge crater 300 feet deep and 14 miles in diameter, sadly many lives were lost, victims of the biggest explosion of conventional weapon dumps in either of the two World Wars.

Just before reaching this awesome crater there is a short sharp climb to reach a fine viewpoint of the distant Derbyshire hills. This will be an ideal spot for a mid morning coffee break.. Suitably refreshed we enjoy a pleasant woodland walk to reach the edge of the crater.. The route follows the western and southern edges of the crater before turning south and then west to our lunchtime destination, the village of Hanbury..There will be refreshment's available here including the Cock Inn pub.. This pub replaced the original one expensively damaged in the Fauld explosion. Pictures of the devastation can be seen inside the pub. . A pleasant grassy area surrounding the church offers an alternative picnic spot.

In the afternoon we leave Hanbury via the church lane and head west across open rolling fields to the village of Draycott in the Clay. There will be an opportunity for a short break here visiting the Swan pub.. This delightful walk continues over mixed terrain south east to Woodend hamlet and finally swings northeast back to Tutbury for a 6.30 pm coach departure home.

We continue to welcome new members who will be guaranteed a day of healthy exercise, attractive scenery and friendly company. The McEwens coach leaves the "Staff Of Life" pub on Hack Lane in Sutton-in-Ashfield at 9.15am and the Bancroft Lane end, Stockwell Gate (near the Netto supermarket) in Mansfield at 9.30am. There are other pivk up points en route. The fare is £9, accompanied juniors free. Although the club walks are becoming increasingly popular there is no need to prebook your seat on the coach.
