Castleton Dark Peak Ramble

The club starts to get into festive mood focusing in on the Castleton area and taking in the famous Castleton Christmas Lights. We shall be enjoying the spectacular Dark Peak scenery around Castleton including the Hope Valley Ridge. The main walk will be a distance of 10 miles with longer or shorter options available during the day.

The walk starts at the Hope car park (grid ref SK171835) and makes a steady ascent towards and then up Lose Hill. Then from Backtor Nook the route progresses along Barker Bank to Hollins Cross and then descends into Edale village which will be our late lunch stop with refreshments at a choice of two pubs. For those wishing to take a less strenuous option there will be an easier route via Round and Brockett Booth Plantations rejoining the main party at Back Tor Nook.

The afternoon walk will head for the summit of Mam Tor (weather permitting) before making a steady descent by Windy Knoll Cave and on towards Castleton via the Blue John and Treak Cliff Caverns where we may enjoy a short break before continuing on to Speedwell Cavern. The final section is then downhill into the welcoming arms of Castleton with its twinkling lights and festivities. There will be an opportunity to explore the shops, cafes and hostelries for 45 minutes before the coach departs for home from the bus terminus (grid ref SK152830) at approx 5.45pm.

For the more adventurous ramblers there will be an option of an extended walk from Windy Knoll joining the Limestone Way and descending through Cave Dale back into Castleton.

We continue to welcome new members and can always offer healthy exercise, attractive scenery and friendly company. The McEwens coach leaves the "Staff of Life" pub on Hack Lane in Sutton-in-Ashfield at 9.15am and the Bancroft Lane end, Stockwell Gate (near the Netto supermarket) in Mansfield at 9.30am. There is no need to prebook your seat on the coach. The fare is £9. There are other pick up points en route.
