Taddington White Peak RambleOn Sunday (31st) the Sutton Rambling Club start their winter programme with a steady 8.5 mile walk in typical White Peak countryside. This will be a circular ramble starting at the village of Taddington (grid ref 147710).

Taddington is a long village 1100 feet above sea level putting it amongst the highest villages in England. It may also hold the record for England's earliest bypass, completed in 1938. The route initially takes us south up a stony, walled track on the edge of Taddington Moor where we should be able to enjoy expansive views of typical White Peak scenery. We then link up with the Limestone Way and pause in the old mining village of Flagg for a mid morning coffee break. The morning section of 4 miles is completed by continuing south-east along the L.W. into the attractive village of Monyash. This is an ideal spot for a lunch break with refreshments available at the Old Smith cafe and the Bulls Head Inn.

Suitably refreshed we then head back north across the High Low disused mines area and then along the dry limestone valley of Deep Dale. This is an attractive 1.5 mile stretch with soaring limestone cliffs resembling the bastions of an old-world fortress. There is then an opportunity for a mid afternoon tea break at the White Lodge picnic site with toilet facilities nearby. The afternoon section (4.5 miles) is completed with a steady climb through pleasant woodland up to Taddington Fields and then returning to Taddington via concessionary paths and quiet lanes. The coach will depart from the village at 4.30pm.

We continue to welcome new members with a mixture of healthy exercise, attractive scenery and friendly company. The club continues with fortnightly rambles throughout the winter. The McEwens coach leaves the "Staff of Life" pub on Hack Lane in Sutton-in-Ashfield at 9.15am and the Bancroft Lane end, Stockwell Gate (near the Netto supermarket) in Mansfield at 9.30am. There is no need to prebook your seat on the coach. The fare is £9. There are other pick up points available en route.
