Sutton in Ashfield Rambling Club
On Sunday (3rd) the members of the Sutton Rambling Club will be moving across to Staffordshire on the south-western fringes of the White Peak area. They will be enjoying an attractive 12 mile ramble including a nature reserve, canal and woodland scenery.
The route will start at Bradnop just off the A523 Leek-Ashbourne road (grid ref 012 553) and head south to the Coombes and Churnet Valley Nature Reserve where there will be an "elevenses" stop. It is then down the Devils Staircase (passing Price"s Cave) and on to Consallforge for the lunch break. Refreshments should be available at the local pub.
Suitably refreshed the afternoon begins with a stretch alongside the Caldon Canal until we reach Froghall Wharf for a mid-afternoon break. Then onwards up the "Old Inclined Plane" to Whiston and then to Oakermoor for a 6.30 pm coach departure home.
We continue to welcome new members with a day of healthy exercise, attractive scenery and friendly company. The McEwens coach leaves the "Staff of Life" pub on Hack Lane in Sutton-in-Ashfield at 9.15am and the Bancroft Lane end, Stockwell Gate (near the Netto supermarket) in Mansfield at 9.30am. There are other pick up points en route. There is no need to prebook your seat on the coach. The fare is £9.
