White Peak Area - Lathkill DaleOn Sunday (8th) the members of the Sutton Rambling Club will be continuing their popular series of summer walks with a comfortable 11 mile ramble in beautiful Lathkill Dale at the heart of the White Peak area.

The walk begins at Arbor Low (grid ref 170638). This is a circle of rough hewn stones and has been rather grandly called "The Stonehenge of the Midlands". It commands wonderful views over the uplands between the rivers Dove and Wye. The route takes us north past Cales Farm and along Cales Dale until we reach Lathkill Dale. This will be good opportunity for a mid-morning coffee break. The word "Lathkill" is reputed to be a Scandinavian word meaning "narrow valley with a barn" and dates back to 1280.

After our break we head north-west along Lathkill Dale and then Fern Dale ultimately reaching the tranquil pretty village of Monyash which is an ideal location for a lunch stop with a choice of refreshments available.

After lunch we return to Lathkill Dale and contour around the northern rim and then descend back into the Dale. It is an impressive sight with its towering cliffs. We continue eastwards along the dale until we arrive at the village of Over Haddon. There was originally another "Haddon " village called Nether Haddon but it was demolished to make way for the building of Haddon Hall leaving Over Haddon in splendid isolation. There will be time for late afternoon tea at the Lathkull Dale Hotel.. The last stage of the walk cuts across field paths to the attractive market town of Bakewell (grid ref 220688). The coach will leave Bakewell at 6.30 pm.

We continue to welcome new members with a day of healthy exercise, attractive scenery and friendly company. The McEwens coach leaves the "Staff of Life" pub on Hack Lane in Sutton-in-Ashfield at 9.15am and the Bancroft Lane end, Stockwell Gate (near the Netto supermarket) in Mansfield at 9.30am. There are other pick up points en route. There is no need to prebook your seat on the coach. The fare is £9.
