On Sunday (15th November 2009) the members of the Sutton Rambling Club will be enjoying a very attractive walk along several dales in the heart of the Peak District. The ramble covers a distance of 9 miles, but this distance can be shortened by taking the shorter version excluding Litton Edge.

Monsal trail walk Peak District

The walk will start at Monsal Head (grid ref 185716). A dramatic starting point with fantastic views down Monsal Dale and up the Wye valley. The route then takes us north along the Monsal Trail until we reach the hillside village of Cressbrook where we will enjoy a short coffee break. We then continue up the thickly wooded Cressbrook Dale and reach the limestone outcrop of Peter's Stone (name probably derived because of its similarity to St. Peter's Basilica in Rome). The stone is also infamous for being the last gibbet swung in Derbyshire in 1812. On this occasion we have chosen this site for a short picnic stop, having now covered a distance of 5 miles.

After this break there is an optional diversion over Ravens Crag for the more energetic members of the party. The main route follows along Litton Edge and then drops down to Litton village. There is the opportunity of a longer break here with a choice of either the Post Office cafe or the atmospheric village pub.

The final section of this lovely walk heads down Litton Dale, on through Tideswell Dale and finally to finish at Millers Dale. If time permits we will explore some of the open access land to discover better views in this area. The coach will pick us up for the return journey home at the Anglers Rest pub (grid ref 140733) at 4.30 pm.

New members are always most welcome and can be guaranteed healthy exercise in attractive scenery amidst friendly company.

The McEwens coach leaves the "Staff of Life " pub on Hack Lane in Sutton-in-Ashfield at 9.15 am and the Bancroft Lane end,Stockwell Gate (near the Netto supermarket) in Mansfield at 9.30 am.There are other pick up points en route.
