On Sunday (3rd May 2009) the members of the Sutton Rambling Club will be heading for attractive limestone dale country in the heart of the White Peak. This will be a steady ramble with ample time to enjoy the views. The starting point will be the hamlet of Pikehall (grid ref 192591) on the A5012 and then proceeds north-east past Long Dale to the village of Middleton. The route continues in that direction along Bradford Dale until we reach the picturesque village of Youlgreave where lunchtime refreshments will be enjoyed.
The first part of the afternoon section continues along the dale to Alport and onwards past Shining Cliff quarry to Haddon Hall. We then change direction and follow the footpath by the River Wye up to Bakewell which will be a good choice for an afternoon tea stop. The day finishes with a pleasant amble into Ashford-in-the-Water and north for a spectacular finish at the famous viewpoint of Monsal Head (grid ref 184714). This will be our departure point for home at 6.30 pm.
As always new members will be made most welcome and will find this walk a comfortable introduction to our popular club. There is no requirement to pre-book your seat on the coach.
The McEwens coach leaves the "Staff of Life " pub on Hack Lane in Sutton-in-Ashfield at 9.15 am and the Bancroft Lane end, Stockwell Gate (near the Netto supermarket) in Mansfield at 9.30 am. There are other pick-up points available en route.
