On Sunday (19th April 2009) the members of the Sutton Rambling Club will be continuing their series of attractive wide-ranging walks with a trip to Staffordshire a few miles south of the White Peak area.
The walk will start at Gallows Green (grid ref 068416) about a mile south of Alton. We then head west across to the hamlet of Bradley in the Moors, past Bradley church and follow footpaths up to Alton Common and Newton.
The route then descends through a wood and along picturesque Dimmings Dale. We then enjoy lunch break at the end of the dale at the appropriately named Ramblers Retreat cafe.
The afternoon route then takes us north-east to the hamlet of Farley (068442) and then across farmland and woods to Wooton Park which will be a nice location for an afternoon tea break. The final section passes Wootton Lodge and on to our finishing point Wootton village (096437) for a 6.00 pm coach departure home.
This will be a steady enjoyable walk in one of the lesser known dales and would be a good choice for a first ramble with us. New members ate always most welcome and we can offer friendly company, healthy exercise and attractive scenery. Whilst our walks are becoming increasingly popular there will be ample room and you do not have to pre-book your seat on the coach.
The McEwens coach leaves the "Staff of Life " pub on Hack Lane in Sutton-in-Ashfield at 9.15 am and the Bancroft Lane end, Stockwell Gate (near the Netto supermarket) in Mansfield at 9.30 am. There are other pick-up points available en route.
