On Sunday (5th April 2009) the members of the Sutton Rambling Club will be continuing their series of attractive walks. This latest ramble will be centred around Lyme Park on the western fringes of the Dark Peak. There will be a variety of scenery to enjoy including canal paths, parkland and moorland. The full walk will be a distance of 12 miles but there will be a shorter option available during the afternoon.

Macclesfield canal rambleThe walk will start at High Lane on the A6 (Grid Ref 951854).The first section heads south-west alongside the Macclesfield Canal and then branches off into Lyme Park where we will have our lunch stop at the cafe. Lyme Park has been an enclosed deer park since the thirteenth century and is still a deer park today covering a area of 1300 acres administered by the National Trust.

Duly refreshed we continue west through the Park until we reach West Parkgate. At this point the walk heads east as we skirt around the edge of Park Moor towards Sponds Hill and enjoy the open moorland views. The route then moves north hugging the edge of Park Moor until reaching Bowstonegate. We shall see the site of the "Bowstones" - it is thought that the stones are the broken shafts of Celtic crosses often used as waymarkers when this would have been an important crossroads. At this point we leave the Moor and travel North-eastwards to Furness Vale.

The final section of the walk is a steady stroll alongside the Peak Forest Canal aiming to finish at Whaley Bridge (grid ref 012813) for a departure home between 6.00 and 6.15 pm
As always new members are made most welcome-we offer frienly company, healthy exercise and attractive scenery. We see new faces on nearly every ramble. There is no requirment to pre-book your seat on the coach.

The McEwens coach leaves the "Staff of Life " pub on Hack Lane in Sutton-in-Ashfield at 9.15 am and the Bancroft Lane end, Stockwell Gate (near the Netto supermarket) in Mansfield at 9.30 am. There are other pick-up points available en route.
