On Sunday (24th) the Sutton Rambling Club continue its diverse summer programme and move north into the southern edges of the Dark Peak. The twelve mile circular ramble offers a spectacular mix of scenery encompassing gritstone edges, open moorland, reservoirs, woods and farmland.

The route starts by the A6187 just above the Fox House Inn (grid ref 269803). Initially there is a brief woodland section as we move north onto the picturesque Burbage Edge, then head east across Burbage Moor and onto the remote Houndkirk Road (originally an old coach road between Buxton and Sheffield). There will be an opportunity to enjoy the moorland views and the distant expanse of Sheffield as we take a mid-morning refreshment break at Sparkinson's Spring. Duly refreshed we continue north past Brown Edge Farm and around Rud Hill and will then be rewarded with panoramic views of the Redmire Reservoirs, constructed between 1836 and 1854 to provide part of the water supply for the rapidly expanding city of Sheffield. The lunch break will be taken on the slopes overlooking the reservoirs.

In the afternoon we head south west to Stanedge Pole and drop down to Hollin Bank car park for an early afternoon stop. Refreshments and loos available at this point. We then enjoy a pleasant walk south through fields and woods up to the outskirts of Hathersage. Just before the church the route heads east as we climb back up onto Hathersage Moor via Mitchells Field Farm. After reaching a stonewalled sheepfold we drop down to Toad's Mouth to finish back at Fox House Inn for a 6.30pm coach departure home.

We continue to welcome new members as the club continues to provide attractive scenery, healthy exercise and friendly company. The McEwens coach leaves the "Staff Of Life" pub on Hack Lane in Sutton-in-Ashfield at 9.15am and the Bancroft Lane end, Stockwell Gate (near the old Netto supermarket) in Mansfield at 9.30am. Ther are other pick up points en route. The fare is £9, accompanied juniors free. Although our walks are very popular there is no need to prebook your seat on the coach.
