The Sutton Rambling Club continue their popular series of walks with a 9.5 scenic ramble in the much loved Cromford and Matlock area of the White Peak. There will be a rich variety of scenery/locations en route.

The walk will start from the A632 just to the north of Matlock (grid ref 316608). The route heads east to the attractive Lumsdale with a succession of cloughs and cascades. Extensive mill ruins can be seen in this area.
Then move south to enjoy the views from Riber Castle. The castle was built in the 1860"s for John Smedley, a local mill owner. It is currently being converted into apartments. We then continue south through Bilberry Knoll and finish the morning part of the walk at Cromford Mill-the first cotton mill built by Richard Arkwright in 1771. There will be ample opportunity to enjoy refreshments here with a choice of cafes.
Suitably refreshed the walk heads west through Slinter Wood and north to Bonsall, an interesting village at the head of a limestone valley. Two points of interest are its Market Cross and Church, restored in 1863. After Bonsall it is almost immediately onto the Limestone Way and arcing back into Matlock to finish at the Matlock Bus/Railway Station. Estimated time of departure 4.15 pm.
We continue to welcome new members who can be assured of a day offering healthy exercise, attractive scenery and friendly company. The McEwens coach leaves the "Staff Of Life " pub on Hack Lane in Sutton-in-Ashfield at 9.15am and the Bancroft Lane end, Stockwell Gate (near the Netto supermarket) in Mansfield at 9.30am. There is no need to prebook your seat on the coach. The fare is £9, accompanied juniors free. There are other pick up points en route.
